Pull Tabs at Bars vs VFW Posts: Where Should You Play?
Bars and VFW posts both offer pull tabs, but the experience is different. Here's how to choose the right venue for you.
When it comes to playing pull tabs, you have two main types of venues to choose from — bars and restaurants on one hand, and fraternal organizations like VFW posts, American Legion halls, and Eagles clubs on the other. Both offer charitable gaming, but the experience can be quite different.
The Bar Experience
Bars and restaurants are the most common pull tab venues, especially in metro areas. You'll typically find pull tabs sold directly by the bartender from behind the bar. The atmosphere is casual — you're playing tabs while having a drink, watching the game, and chatting with other patrons.
The advantages of bars include convenience (they're everywhere), longer operating hours, food and drink options, and a more casual atmosphere. Many bars now also offer electronic pull tabs alongside paper, giving you more options.
The trade-off is that bar pull tabs are often limited in selection. A bar might carry one to three games at a time, and the bartender handles tabs alongside their regular duties, so service during busy times can be slower.
The VFW and Fraternal Organization Experience
VFW posts, American Legion halls, Eagles clubs, and similar organizations often have dedicated pull tab booths with volunteers or staff focused entirely on running the games. This means more game selection, more knowledgeable staff, and a more dedicated gaming experience.
These venues often offer a wider variety of pull tab games at different price points, better tracking of remaining prizes in each deal, dedicated bingo nights and other charitable gaming events, a community atmosphere with regulars who know each other, and often lower drink prices than commercial bars.
The atmosphere at a VFW or Legion post is typically more relaxed and community-oriented. You'll meet veterans, longtime locals, and dedicated pull tab players who can share tips and stories. Many posts also host weekly events like bingo nights, meat raffles, and dinners that add to the social experience.
Game Selection and Availability
Fraternal organizations generally offer more pull tab games because they have dedicated space and staff for it. A VFW post might have six to ten different games running at various price points, compared to two or three at a typical bar.
Some fraternal organizations also run the games during specific hours with a booth operator, which means better tracking of deals, more transparency about remaining prizes, and a more organized gaming experience.
Which Supports Your Community More?
Both venues support charitable organizations — that's the entire point of charitable gambling. But the specific organization and cause varies. When you play at a VFW post, proceeds support veterans' programs. At an Eagles club, they support community charities. At a bar, the charitable organization that operates the games might be a youth sports league, a church, or any other licensed nonprofit.
If you care about where your gaming dollars go, ask which organization runs the pull tabs at the venue. Most operators are proud of their charitable mission and happy to tell you about it.
The Verdict
There's no wrong answer. If you want convenience, a casual atmosphere, and pull tabs alongside dinner and drinks, a bar is perfect. If you want a dedicated gaming experience with more selection, better odds transparency, and a tight-knit community, check out your local VFW, Legion, or Eagles club.
Better yet, try both. Part of the fun of pull tabs is exploring different venues and finding your favorite spots.
